Saying goodbye to a valued team member is never easy, especially when that person has made a lasting impact on the work and the people around them. This summer, we will bid farewell to Annabel Fuller, our clinical research assistant, as she embarks on an exciting new journey in her Clinical Psychology PhD program at Texas A&M University. Annabel’s time in our lab has been marked by dedication, innovation, and a clear passion for advancing mental health research. Her contributions have shaped several important projects, and her departure leaves a meaningful legacy.

Annabel’s Journey in Our Lab

Annabel joined our team in 2023 as an undergraduate volunteer. From the start, she showed a strong commitment to learning and contributing to mental health research. After graduating in May 2024, she transitioned into a full-time clinical research assistant role. During this time, Annabel took on leadership roles in several key studies that have helped shape our understanding of mental health interventions.

She led a study focused on developing virtual crisis interventions for teenagers, a group that often faces barriers to accessing timely mental health support. By leading this study, Annabel helped create tools that provide immediate, accessible assistance to young people in distress. This work is especially important given the rising rates of mental health challenges among adolescents.

Advancing Resilience and Reducing Alcohol Misuse

Another significant area where Annabel made a difference involved her leadership role in a study investigating resilience-based interventions for undergraduates struggling with alcohol misuse. College years can be a vulnerable time for many students, and this research aimed to build stronger coping skills and reduce harmful drinking behaviors. Her leadership in this project aided in the design of programs that focus on mental resilience, which can protect students from the negative effects of stress and peer pressure.

Investigating New Treatments for Stress-Related Drinking

Most recently, Annabel has been leading an ongoing study investigating an orexin receptor antagonist. This medication shows promise in helping individuals reduce stress-related drinking, a behavior that often leads to long-term health problems. By exploring brain-based biomarkers, Annabel’s contribution to this work is aiding in the effort to push the boundaries of how we understand and treat mental health conditions linked to substance use.

Her passion for using neuroscience to improve mental health outcomes is clear. This research could open new doors for personalized treatments that address the biological roots of stress and addiction.

The Impact of Annabel’s Work

Annabel’s contributions go beyond the studies themselves. She has been a source of inspiration and motivation for the entire lab. Her enthusiasm for mental health research and her drive to make a difference have created a positive environment where ideas flourish.

Her ability to lead complex projects while maintaining a collaborative spirit has helped the team achieve results that matter.

Looking Ahead: Annabel’s PhD Journey

As Annabel begins her Clinical Psychology PhD program at Texas A&M University, we are confident she will continue to excel. Her strong foundation in clinical research, combined with her passion for brain-based mental health solutions, positions her to become a leader in the field.

A Heartfelt Farewell

Annabel’s departure is bittersweet. While we will miss her daily presence and contributions, we celebrate her achievements and the exciting path ahead. Her work has left a lasting mark on our lab and the broader mental health community.

We congratulate Annabel on this major milestone and wish her success in her PhD program and future career. Her dedication to advancing mental health research inspires us all to keep pushing forward.

Mental health research depends on passionate individuals like Annabel Fuller who combine curiosity, skill, and compassion.
